Dr. Marion O. Hagler

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering
Texas Tech University
Lubbock, TX

Dr. Hagler is P. W. Horn Professor of Electrical Engineering. He received his B. A. degree from Rice University in 1962, his B. S. E. E. from Rice University in 1963, his M. S. E. E.from the University of Texas at Austin in 1964, and his Ph. D. from the University of Texas at Austin in 1967.

During 1995-96, Dr. Hagler took leave from Texas Tech and served as Kyushu Electric Power Company Visiting Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Kumamoto University in Kumamoto Japan. During his tenure in Japan, Dr. Hagler made multimedia and World Wide Web technology an integral part of lectures he presented to graduate students and undergraduate students. He participated in pulsed power research and initiated, with H. Akiyama, research on the application of spiral transmission lines to drive streamer discharges for the removal of the oxides of nitrogen from electric power generating plant effluents. He visited universities in Japan and Taiwan to assess the nature and extent of current changes in engineering education in these countries.

Having taught almost all of the required undergraduate courses in electrical engineering as well as electives and graduate courses in optics, plasmas, and linear systems, Dr. Hagler currently is particularly interested in the application of instructional technologies to engineering education. He served as the guest editor for the August 1996 IEEE Transactions on Education special issue on the application of infomration technologies to engineering and science ecuation. This Transactions issue was the first published by the IEEE that was accompanied by a CD-ROM disk. In addition, Dr. Hagler was the Co-Editor of the Rapid Publication Supplement to the November 1997 issue of the IEEE Transactions on Education, also accompanied by a CD-ROM.

Dr. Hagler serves on the Administrative Committee of the IEEE Education Society and as Chair of the Finance Committee for the IEEE Educational Activities Board. He has served as Chair of the IEEE Awards Board, President of the National Electrical Engineering Department Heads Association and Chair of the Steering Committee for the Frontiers in Education Conference.

He and his wife, Shirlene, have three children, four grandchildren, and "lots of fun." Dr. Hagler particularly enjoys sedentary activities such as reading, writing, and traveling.
